Pivotal Play Costs Crowley in Loss to Iota

The Crowley Gents were within four yards of tying Friday’s game against the Iota Bulldogs, but instead, the Gents were unable to punch in the pigskin, falling to the parish rivals, 40-20, in the Gents’ Homecoming contest.

The Gents, down 27-20, had the ball first and goal on the IHS four-yard-line, but Crowley couldn’t capitalize.

Iota went to add two more touchdowns to pull away for the convincing victory.

The Gents fell to 3-3 overall, 1-2 in the district.

The Bulldogs crossed the goal line first in the opening quarter, but the Gents responded early in the second quarter with a 68-yard drive.  Crowley junior quarterback Marquis Garrett brought the Gents to within 7-6 on a one-yard touchdown run with more than 11 minutes remaining until halftime.

The Bulldogs extended the lead back to 20-6 on a passing touchdown with six minutes left in the second quarter, but the Gents answered with six of their own when Garrett connected with junior Obadiah Butler on a touchdown pass at the five-minute mark.  Garrett ran in the two-point conversion to bring Crowley within 20-14.

Iota received the second half kickoff and scored with seven minutes remaining in the third to push the lead to 27-14.

Crowley answered at the 11-minute mark of the final frame when Garrett hit Butler on a screen that resulted in a 36-yard score to bring the Gents to within 27-20.

Senior running back Jai’Rece Lewis finished the evening as Crowley’s leading rusher with 46 yards on 11 carries.  Garrett ran the ball six times for 28 yards. Butler had 14 carries for 19 yards.

Garrett completed 10-of-22 passes for 196 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Butler was the leading receiver with three catches for 99 yards and two scores.  Senior wide receiver Demarcus Dioron had two receptions for 58 yards.  Senior tight end Rapheus Joseph caught three passes for 25 yards.
